Want to walk out the front door refreshed and ready to kick ass? You need a morning routine! Although I highly encourage giving yourself at least an hour before you are to leave the house, sometimes, as my momma say, “that just ain’t gon’ fly.” With minimalism, less is more. Let’s focus on the necessary few steps for a refreshing morning routine. *For Traveler- the minimalist carry-on essentials.*
Seems like everyone has their go-to beautifying morning drink. Regardless of the health benefits of ginger/lemon water, apple cider vinegar, and a host of other morning concoctions, the key is that they all require water. Hydrate yourself.
Did I seduce you? Good! Can’t skip it! No need to complicate things with a 12-step skin care plan, simply cleanse, moisturize, and one more imperative step- sunscreen! Don’t forget your hairline, chest, and ears. This includes you, my darker beauties! In the U.S., black women have less of a survival rate with skin cancer than white women, often because it isn’t caught until much later on. Lather up, ladies.
Check your work email before you get there. Trust me on this one. On a piece of paper, jot down the 3 most important things you must get done today, something you’re thankful for, and a smiley face, and throw it in your purse. In the mirror, look yourself in the eyes and say something positive out loud. “Today is going to be great,” or “you got this.” Whatever is clever.
Even if it’s just a minute. Even if it’s just in bed. Get that cat-cow meowing and mooing.
I’m not going to lecture you on how important breakfast is, because you already know. Ideally, you’ll have a mix of clean carbs and protein. What does that look like? Whole grain toast + peanut butter + banana slices. Eggs + corn tortilla + avocado. Turkey sausage + apple slices + cheese + grits. Oatmeal + almonds + seasonal fruit. Can’t stand chewing that early? Try a smoothie or Carnation instant breakfast with fat-free milk.
