The Minimalist Morning Routine

The #minimalist #morning routine || a tipsy gypsy life

Want to walk out the front door refreshed and ready to kick ass? You need a morning routine! Although I highly encourage giving yourself at least an hour before you are to leave the house, sometimes, as my momma say, “that just ain’t gon’ fly.” With minimalism, less is more. Let’s focus on the necessary few steps for a refreshing morning routine. *For Traveler- the minimalist carry-on essentials.

HYDRATE

Seems like everyone has their go-to beautifying morning drink. Regardless of the health benefits of ginger/lemon water, apple cider vinegar, and a host of other morning concoctions, the key is that they all require water. Hydrate yourself.

Did I seduce you? Good! Can’t skip it! No need to complicate things with a 12-step skin care plan, simply cleanse, moisturize, and one more imperative step- sunscreen! Don’t forget your hairline, chest, and ears. This includes you, my darker beauties! In the U.S., black women have less of a survival rate with skin cancer than white women, often because it isn’t caught until much later on. Lather up, ladies.

Check your work email before you get there. Trust me on this one. On a piece of paper, jot down the 3 most important things you must get done today, something you’re thankful for, and a smiley face, and throw it in your purse. In the mirror, look yourself in the eyes and say something positive out loud. “Today is going to be great,” or “you got this.” Whatever is clever.

STRETCH

Even if it’s just a minute. Even if it’s just in bed. Get that cat-cow meowing and mooing.

FUEL

I’m not going to lecture you on how important breakfast is, because you already know. Ideally, you’ll have a mix of clean carbs and protein. What does that look like? Whole grain toast + peanut butter + banana slices. Eggs + corn tortilla + avocado. Turkey sausage + apple slices + cheese + grits. Oatmeal + almonds + seasonal fruit. Can’t stand chewing that early? Try a smoothie or Carnation instant breakfast with fat-free milk.

What’s your secret to a wonderful morning? Anything I should add?

Hate the morning? Here’s how to wake up happy

I have always been the morning person. A bit of a blessing and a curse- I always get first dibs on pretty much life but I also spent many a youthful morning painfully waiting for friends to wake up…. Here are my pointers to waking up earlier and happier.

1) Plan a kick ass breakfast

…that you know you will look forward to eating. If you truly despise eating in the morning, at least get down lemon ginger water. You’ll be able to feel the toxins leaving your body.

2) Create (or find) a playlist that will get you going in the mornings.

I suggest some French House via 8tracks.com

3) Get a micro-work out in.

I mean as simple as 10 push-ups, 30 Russian twists, and 20 squats. The point is to get your blood flowing. When I had to start getting up at 6:00 in 30 degree weather, this ish saved mah life.

4) Have a routine treat.

Give yourself something to look forward to every morning. I personally go for a cup of instant coffee with way too much creamer (guilty) on the mornings I don’t have a lot of time. If I have time, I plan a bubble bath. So serious.

5) Get into the habit of immediately standing up when your alarm goes off.

Hokay , this isn’t exactly a way to make you happy. But the faster you get moving, the quicker your brain will wake up, and you won’t have to fight the ever-losing battle of willpower.

6) Allow yourself 3-5 minutes to get inspired.

I prefer to look at Pinterest Quotes or Humor, but a short TED talk would be equally beneficial. As soon as I get moved into my new place I’ll be uploading daily inspiration.
